Tongue Scraping – An Ancient Treatment

Some 3000 to 5000 years ago Ayurveda was conceived as a system of living harmoniously and maintaining the body so that spiritual awareness could be possible. An aspect of “maintaining the body” is embracing a daily routine. 

I have had the privilege of studying with the renowned Ayurvedic Physician Dr. Vasant Lad and he essentialayurveda-handsome-senior-man-sticking-tongue-out.jpgsays, “a daily routine is absolutely necessary to bring radical change in body, mind, and consciousness.”  Tongue Scraping is an important element in our self-care daily routine. 

Western medicine research (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15341360) is now starting to acknowledge that the use of a tongue scraper is more efficient than a toothbrush at removing bacteria and toxins from our tongue.  

First thing in the morning scrape your tongue for 7-14 strokes, even before you brush your teeth.
The most important benefit of tongue scraping is the improvement to our health. The premise of Ayurveda is that sickness starts through improper digestion and since digestion begins in the mouth, tongue scraping is an important step in maintaining our body and as the ancient texts say, awakening our spirit.
