Nirgundi – Sanskrit literal interpretation “That which protects the body from ailments.”
Ayurveda is well known for its use of plant-based ingredients in a wide variety of salves, balms, pastes and treatments. The Sanskrit literal interpretation of Nirgundi, “That which protects the body from diseases”, is a powerful statement for such a little-known plant. At Essential Ayurveda we appreciate the powerful properties Nirgundi contributes to our balms!
Nirgundi is found in other countries but is native to India and commonly grown as an evergreen hedge around a home. In India, interestingly the leaves are used as both a biopesticide as well as insecticide and the smoke from its leaves are used as a mosquito repellant.
There are very few herbs as multi-talented and versatile as Nirgundi. Nirgundi has wide use in Ayurvedic medicines and at Essential Ayurveda our Balms reap the advantages of a topical application.
It has been well researched that Nirgundi has beneficial properties:
Analgesic: Acting to relieve pain
Anti-inflammatory: Reducing inflammation
Anti-microbial: Active against microbes
Muscle relaxant: Relaxes or reduces tension in muscle
Anti-arthritic: Effective in relief of joint pain
